We were proud to recently feature in the Ruapehu Bulletin following a visit from local MP Carl Bates. Susan welcomed Carl to Ruapehu Distillery a couple of weeks ago, where he toured the distillery, learned more about the story behind the business, and sampled our locally made Straight Up Carrot Gin.
During the visit, Carl Bates shared strong support for the venture, recognising the value of locally owned businesses that bring new energy to the Ruapehu region economy. He also highlighted the importance of unique visitor attractions such as distillery tours, tastings, and excellent food and drink experiences in helping grow tourism in Ohakune and the wider Central Plateau.
Carl Bates showed genuine interest in the opportunities and challenges facing small New Zealand distilleries. Discussion included the impact of excise payments on small distilleries and how a future excise rebate scheme could help encourage job creation, business growth, regional investment, and export opportunities for the New Zealand spirits industry.
He was also keen to understand the process of building a distillery from the ground up. Susan shared that one of the biggest hurdles for new distilleries can be navigating multiple compliance requirements across different agencies, often providing similar information several times through separate processes. A more streamlined and coordinated system could make it easier for small manufacturers and tourism businesses to invest and grow.
Carl Bates recognised the value of innovative businesses like Ruapehu Distillery in supporting the Ruapehu region economy through tourism, hospitality, manufacturing, and local employment.
As a new business built in the heart of Ohakune, it was great to share our vision for creating something special that showcases local spirit, local flavour, and the adventurous 'spirit' of the Ruapehu region.
We thank Carl Bates for taking the time to visit and for backing local innovation, tourism, and small business in the Ruapehu region.
