Why Autumn in Ohakune hits different
Autumn is when Ohakune slows down but in the best way.
The summer crowds have gone, the mountain air sharpens, and the landscape shifts into deep reds, golds, and burnt orange. It’s the kind of season where everything feels a little more relaxed… and a lot more memorable. The last few weeks have seen clear skies, crisp mornings, and breathtaking views.
If you’re looking for a weekend that blends adventure, good food, and something worth sipping slowly, this is it.
Saturday Morning: Start with the Outdoors
Kick things off with fresh alpine air.
Take on part or the whole of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing if you're feeling ambitious - way less crowds in May and the weather can be very settled.
Or opt for shorter walks around Tongariro National Park
Or join in the famous Park Run along the Mangawhero River. Starts bang on 8.00am and a great way to meet others.
Mountain biking trails around Ohakune are the best at this time of year with crisp air, quiet tracks, and the eye-grabbing autumn. TCB will have all your bike hire and track needs taken care of.
Local tip: Autumn mornings are cold but calm. Layer up, go early, and you’ll often have the place to yourself.
Midday - Refuel in town
After a morning outdoors head back into Ohakune for something warm.
Think:
Perfect Coffee from Nook
Hearty Brunch from Mountain Rocks or
Rush on in to The Hungry Rush for a selection of locally grown produced turned into burger and loaded fry magic
Utopia Cafe will have your sweet treats covered too.
Afternoon Distillery Experience
This is where your weekend levels up.
At Ruapehu Distillery, you’ll step inside a working distillery and see exactly how it all comes together from botanicals to bottle.
Expect:
A behind-the-scenes look at the distillation process - if you book in for a tour
A chance to meet the Nigella the copper pot still
Tastings that actually tell a story
And yes ... this is where you’ll meet Straight Up Carrot Gin. It even has it's own song!
Late Afternoon: Mountain Views & Golden Light
As the sun drops, the mountain puts on a show.
Head up to the Junction end of town, sit on the sunny deck at The Powderkeg, or take in the incredible vista from the deck at Kings... and take it all in. Enjoy a local drink and relax as the autumn light hits differently. It's softer, warmer, and gone too quickly.
For dinner, mosey on down to The Kitchen where you can order Pizza from The Pizzeria and have it delivered to your table in The Kitchen while imbibing on their grand selection of serves.
Evening: Good Food, Great Company
The other end of town has fantastic options for dinner:
The Cypress Tree - you'll enjoy hearty fare and a mountain town atmosphere
Rice Bar and Food - serve asian inspired cooking with an extensive cocktail list
No 8 Restaurant and Bar - you'll find the famous fried bread option a must try
Osteria - an Italian restaurant serving an array of pasta and pizza dishes.
Mountain Rocks - has live Friday night music in May, and a cozy, warm atmosphere to enjoy their menu.
All serve Straight Up Carrot Gin too!
Slow Start: One more Adventure
No rush.
Coffee at Franks
Or make your way to Opus Fresh for coffee and a beautiful selection of NZ Merino clothing
A short walk or scenic stop - Te Awa Mangawhero bike or hike trail
A Big Mountain Burger and locally made mead
Or grab yourself some Ruapehu Brewing locally made beer
Visit Ruapehu Distillery if you missed on Saturday
Then back on the road ... already planning the next trip.
Why Autumn Might Be the Best Time to Visit
